The Recruitment and Training Division ensures that officers and staff are equipped with the professional skills and knowledge needed to serve the community effectively. Training emphasizes communication, de-escalation, trauma-informed response, emergency medical assistance, legal standards, and fair and impartial policing.
New recruit officers undergo academy instruction followed by structured field training with seasoned officers. Continuing education is provided throughout careers to ensure proficiency in evolving best practices. Specialized training supports assignments in investigations, school resource roles, evidence management, crisis response, riverfront patrol, and tactical or emergency support teams.
The department offers career pathways that include patrol, investigations, community policing, youth and school engagement, traffic safety, and field leadership positions. Residents interested in future law enforcement careers may apply for internships, volunteer programs, or observer ride-alongs when available.
The division’s goal is to cultivate officers who are skilled, respectful, community-minded, and committed to service.
